Which City is THE Leading Maritime Capital?

The latest data on the leading maritime capitals of the world has been released for this year and the usual big hitters feature in the top 10, but far from being mundane there have been some interesting changes in the rankings.

Although slightly biased (given our location) it is good to see London break into the top 5 once more, largely due to its strong maritime and law foundation. Singapore clinch the #1 spot followed by Hamburg, Oslo, Shanghai and then London completing the top 5.

As marine consultants the data doesn’t come as a shock to us whilst determining which capitals will most likely have the highest requirement (based on sheer volume alone) for new personnel. The main hubs are already well known, but it does provide us with a clear breakdown of which capitals (and by extension each country & region) tend to specialize in different aspects of the shipping market.

The report by Menon Economics and DNV GL gives us a breakdown in the leaders for maritime technology, shipping, ports & logistics, attractiveness & competitiveness and maritime law & finance. From it we can draw certain conclusions, for example, those individuals at the cutting edge of new maritime technology are most likely to be based in Oslo (or one of the other top 5 cities outlined). Whereas Singapore dominates the #1 spot for 3 of the 5 other categories based on the criteria for the survey.

I’m interested to hear your views on this? Do you agree with the rankings? Which cities are missing?

USP Maritime regularly relocate individuals and families internationally and often find that the ‘where’ will always be a massive factor in deciding whether to accept a new position or contract.
