Revolutionising Maritime Maintenance with Cutting-Edge 3D Scanning Technology

At USP Maritime, we are constantly seeking innovative ways to enhance our capabilities and deliver the highest level of service to our clients. One of the key challenges we face in the maritime industry is the need for accurate and efficient data to carry out repair and refit jobs, particularly in remote locations or when original designs are no longer available. To address this, we have embraced advanced 3D scanning technology, significantly transforming our workflow and improving our service delivery.

The Challenge

Maintaining and refitting vessels, especially those that endure the harsh conditions of the open sea, requires precise and detailed inspection. Traditional methods, such as using tape measures, lasers, and reference photos, are not only labour-intensive but also prone to errors that could delay critical repairs. In the past, USP Maritime relied on long-range LiDAR and target-based 3D scanning to capture the necessary data. While these methods had their successes, they also presented significant challenges, particularly in terms of the time and effort required to achieve accurate results.

The Solution: Embracing Artec Leo and Artec Studio

To overcome these challenges, USP Maritime made the strategic decision to integrate the Artec Leo 3D scanner into our operations. This state-of-the-art device, combined with the powerful capabilities of Artec Studio software, has revolutionized our approach to maritime maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO).

The scanner’s advanced geometry and texture tracking technology eliminate the need for cumbersome targets and PCs, making the data capture process faster and more intuitive.

Real-World Applications: Accelerating Maritime Refit and Repair

Our first projects with the scanner, we were able to digitize a 16-meter crane in a fraction of the time it would have taken with our previous methods. This high level of detail allows us to perform advanced quality assessments, identify potential issues, and develop precise plans for repairs or modifications.

One of the most significant benefits of this technology is its ability to capture complex and difficult-to-access areas. In one instance, we used the Artec Leo to scan an entire engine propulsion room, including a 300-kilogram pump that was nearly impossible to remove. The detailed 3D model enabled our team to strategize and plan repairs remotely, ensuring that we were fully prepared when the vessel next docked.

USP’s advance suite of software handles multiple scans with ease, allowing for rapid alignment and the creation of textured, watertight meshes that are easy to manipulate by our team of Naval Architects and design engineers.  This capability has drastically reduced the time and effort required to process large, complex datasets, enabling us to focus on delivering results for our clients.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Maritime MRO at USP Maritime

As we continue to integrate advanced 3D scanning technology into our operations, we see a bright future for USP Maritime. The ability to create accurate, one-to-one models of nautical equipment and entire vessel sections is becoming a cornerstone of our refit and repair processes. By capturing comprehensive data during each project, we can ensure that no detail is overlooked and that we are always prepared for any future maintenance needs.

The success we’ve achieved with the our recent increase in survey capabilities has led us to further invest in technology, including the purchase of additional advanced software and survey equipment. We are excited to see how these tools will continue to enhance our capabilities and help us deliver exceptional service to our clients.

At USP Maritime, we are committed to staying at the forefront of maritime technology, and our adoption of cutting-edge 3D scanning solutions is just one example of how we are achieving this goal. We look forward to continuing our journey of innovation and excellence in the maritime industry, ensuring that our clients receive the best possible support for their vessels and assets.
